TWENTY

Benjamin

The next few days flew by with work, and Angelina and I hadn’t spent a night together since last Friday. But that wasn’t stopping me from doing something nice for her—no expectations. We’d agreed on just friends-with-benefits, but this felt like something on the friend part that I could fulfill.

“You make the popcorn,” I instructed, “and I’ll queue up the movie.”

“Where’s it at?”

“Third one on the left,” I called out as I rummaged through my DVD collection.

I wasn’t quite sure how we had gotten here, and especially that she’d even agreed to this, something that fundamentally went against every rule Angelina had set for us, but I didn’t care to find out. I would simply enjoy our night together, regardless of how it ended. Yes, the sex was great, but after last week, when she had been so open and vulnerable with me, this was starting to feel like something more. It hadn’t even been a whole month yet since the retreat, but I was already feeling things shifting between us.

The thing was, I hadn’t shown Angelina all of me, not my favorite hobbies, or my dreams and goals. Not to mention my fears. After everything that happened between us, I didn’t think she would make fun of or dismiss it. It felt like the opposite, really—that she wanted me to share myself with her. Wanted me to tell her about the things that defined me and that she wanted to give the same in return.

It was so different from any other relationship I’d ever been in, and yes, we weren’t dating, but she was the only woman who had ever taken the time to get to know the guy underneath the suit. I wasn’t just some rich kid with a fancy apartment and a perfect job to her. With Angelina, I finally felt like maybe I was just Benjamin. And it felt good.

I looked at the titles in front of me, pondering. I knew some people thought it was weird that I had hung onto my DVD collection with streaming being so popular, but I liked the way it sent me back to my childhood—rare movie nights with my mom and dad, the three of us kids all curled up with them on the couch after we picked our movie of the night. A nice, happy memory, where none of us were fighting.

“You know, I don’t know your favorite movie,” I said, thumbing through the cases.

Angelina padded over to the living room with a giant bowl of popcorn in her hands. “If I had to pick, I guess it’d be 10 Things I Hate About You.”

“Really?”

“Is that surprising? You know I like romance. We watched Princess Diaries last week.”

“Not surprising, I guess, just…” I shook my head. I thought it was funny that she picked a movie about a grumpy girl who fell in love with the man she hated.

She narrowed her eyes. “Watch what you say, Sullivan.”

“I wasn’t going to say anything!” I raised my hands in mock surrender.
